This is a great value that no one should pass up if wanting to learn how to surf. My experience with Joey and Ryan has been so valuable. They’re an extremely friendly and personable crew who are knowledgeable about surfing and put in the time and care for their customers! It’s more about quality than quantity and they truly curate the learning style based on where you’re at in your surfing ability. This school is focused solely on your own development with skating and surfing. The coaches took their time with me and my girlfriend. It was fully one-on-one and they have us our full attention. This team truly catered to our own needs and are very passionate about what they do. Thank you so much for such a great time, we'll be back!
Absolutely fantastic! I always have such a great time whenever I book with this school. Teachers are kind, caring, safe, and very knowledgeable. They are up for whatever you want to learn on the lesson all while keeping you safe, which is great if you are scared of the ocean like I am. I highly recommend to book some lessons with this school.

If you ever have a desire to learn to surf or skate, definitely choose surf & skate with Joey. All of the coaches on the team are fantastic and super nice. They all know what they're doing and know exactly how to develop your skills as a skater or surfer. I've had multiple surf lessons and a few skate lessons and I can say with confidence that surf and skate with Joey is one of the best options as far as private lessons go. Highly recommended!

Joey and his team of instructors are legit. I've wanted to surf for quite some time but was having issues graduating from the wavestorm. Joey helped me get my technique down so that I could pick up a smaller board. After a few weeks of sessions I was already riding something quite a bit shorter. I'm too if this - he's just an all around great guy. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
The team does a great job teaching and are excellent with kids! They gave lessons to my 5 and 3 year old, and they absolutely adored Mike and Ryan and love surfing. They are very good at interacting with children, and understand the things that would flip a kid out (and avoids them). For instance when paddling out, they lift the nose of the board so the kids face stays dry. They also do an unbelievable job of keeping the kids upright/on the board. It really helps the kids want to keep going when it is all fun the whole time. I highly recommend Surf With Joey's lessons, they are great fun and an excellent, encouraging learning experience!
I found Surf With Joey, and I committed to getting as many lessons as I possibly could to break through all my surfing obstacles. The group of dudes have all the qualities of excellent instructors - they're patient, responsible, well spoken, adaptable, and best of all, passionate about teaching others how to surf. Joey helped me pick out all my gear (wetsuit, surfboard, poncho, hood, booties). I told him what my goals were, and Coach Mike expertly tailored his guidance to my needs. Now I can pop up on the board on white water and green waves, paddle tirelessly and efficiently, and easily navigate waves without fear to identify the best ones to ride.
Joey is a super nice guy and an excellent surf instructor! My 16 year old niece and her friend were visiting from St Louis and wanted to learn how to surf. We met Joey at the beach - he was right on time and he had wet suits for them and was ready to go! He is patient, gave clear instructions on fundamentals on the beach before they even were in the water. My niece popped up her first try and her friend was standing up on the board very quickly. They both had a lot of fun and were glowing after their lesson. They will definitely take a lesson next summer (after practicing on skateboards in St Louis during the year)!
Joey is truly a skilled professional and hardworking individual who takes pride in his work. I think what stands out most is his genuine passion to effectively teach his students the skills of surfing! His is instinctively calm and compassionate and he is uniquely able to connect with people of all ages! He cares about each and every student and he takes quality time with each lesson. Joey is a kind-hearted young man and you will see that right out the gate when you meet him!! I think he adds a great element of fun and learning to surfing while incorporating a great skill set of technique and experience!!
I recently booked a 10-class package with Joey and have been deeply impressed by his professionalism, warmth and knowledge of surfing. I'm only two lessons in and have made tremendous progress in my surfing - something that would not be possible without the help of an excellent coach. There are dozens of great surf instructors close to where I live, but I drive an hour to the South Bay because I know I'm learning from one of the best surf instructors in Southern California. Joey is dedicated to sharing his love of surfing to surfers of all levels, and I highly recommend him for anyone looking for surf instruction in the South Bay.
The Surf With Joey staff are skilled, approachable, and encouraging instructors! In my first lesson I had caught almost every wave thanks to River's direction. He also pointed out the things I was doing that kept me from where I wanted to go. From board length, to paddle technique to popping up, He made things that seemed complicated easy and kept me motivated while staying honest and realistic. If you are trying to learn to surf and are stuck at some obstacle you feel you can't get past or if you already surf and want to deepen your understanding, skill and ability, I strongly recommend them. They are fun, honest, hard working and good at what they do.
This was my 14 year old son's first time ever trying to surf and Joey made it a wonderful experience for him. Joey and his team made sure to take the time needed to show my son the basics prior to entering the water and worked with him all through the process. Joey had all kinds of wet suits surf boards and everything needed to make this lesson a success.
Imagine how excited my boy was when he got up on the very first try. Now he has the surfing bug.

We had a great lesson with River this weekend. He made sure the 2 adults and 2 kids (age 7 and 9) were well taken care of with gear and instructions. He helped make sure we all had a great time and got to surf! Would highly recommend him!
Hello all, this is the funnest experience I've had. The instructor Sammy was an amazing teacher, he got me up on my first try. He was very encouraging and definitely understood my fears but he worked with me and got me up. I had such an amazing time and definitely would do it again and encourage people to do so. If you want to learn how to surf, go to Surf With Joey, they know how to teach. Definitely a must.
Joey is awesome! I couldn’t believe how fast I was able to stand and turn on my first outing with him. I highly recommend doing a package/bundle if you’re serious about learning quickly and feeling comfortable in the water. He goes over beach safety, managing the board, pop-ups, riding posture, and, most importantly, what not to do!
We don't have big waves in Dallas, TX, and wanted our kids to experience something unique and memorable while visiting LA. Joey has a great balance of enthusiasm, motivation & patience that put our kids at ease and helped them learn effectively. He was responsive, professional and on time, ready for us when we arrived, and he provided everything we needed: wetsuits, surfboard, GoPro & perfect-sized waves on a quiet beach. The personalized one-on-one instruction was tailored to their ability. By the end of the first session, our 13 and 8 year-olds were standing on the surfboard and riding waves to the sand. We would highly recommend him, and will call him again when we are in town!
Just had a lesson with joey and all I can say is wow! Im not going to lie I was a little anxious coming into my lesson at first because I have had very little ocean experience in my life but learning to surf has always been on my bucket list. However as soon as we hit the water and with joeys guidance with I felt comfortable. You can clearly tell he has been surfing for years, unlike most surf instructors I’ve encountered. What really got me stoked though was his teaching style. He was informative yet easy going. No drill sergeant, no expectations, no yelling. What i was most happy about however was the fact that I was able to stand up by the end of the lesson!!! We both felt that I had progressed during my 2 hour lesson and now I'm willing and feel capable to give surfing a shot on my own. All in all a great experience and would definitely recommend!! especially if you are trying to learn quickly and don't feel totally comfortable in the ocean.
I had always wanted to try surfing and my husband got me this gift package to learn from Joey. It was my first time on the board yesterday & I had soooo much fun. Joey was organized, communicative and you can feel the passion he has to share. I felt safe, comfortable and got on the board to ride some waves! The surf & chat about life, nature was the best vitamin sea 😆 ! Can't wait til our next lesson!
My surf coach Sammy proved to be a fantastic instructor for my first time surfing. Joey was attentive and patient in ensuring I understood the steps thoroughly. He constantly provided tips and feedback on how I could improve my technique. Would definitely recommend Sammy to people wanting to learn how to surf or improve their technique!

We had a five-people group so Joey brought another two instructors. One of the instructors had some emergency and couldn't make it so Joey brought his dad, who is the really seasoned surfer and has a great laugh!!
Joey is very articulate and good at giving instruction. After each try, Joey always had me reflected on what I could have done better and told me how I can improve. If you are looking for someone that can set you up for success, Joey is definitely the right coach!
Found Surf With Joey through a friend of a friend, and so happy that I did. They had me up on my first try and I've been hooked ever since. As noted in the other reviews, the instructors takes care of pretty much everything for you. Super accommodating and just an all around good vibe. Highly recommend this school for any first timers out there looking to get into surfing, and I'm already looking forward to our next session!
